Its perfume is soft and delicate, evoking a sense of tropical islands.

What is Monoi de Tahiti?

It’s an infused perfume oil and the word ‘manoi’ in Tahitian translates to ‘scented oil’. Much loved by French Polyneisians, the origin of Monoi de Tahiti can be traced back nearly 2000 years to the indigenous Mahoi people and was used for medicinal, cosmetic and religious purposes.

How is Monoi de Tahiti made?

This beautiful oil is made by soaking the petals of Tahitian gardenias, also known as Tiare flowers in coconut oil. These flowers are carefully hand-picked, and the flower portions are then placed in refined coconut oil for a minimum of two weeks. This process is known as ‘enfleurage’, a French term referring to flower soaking.

Once the refining process is completed the coconut oil is placed into special storage tanks and can only be purchased by one of the very limited Monoi manufacturers in French Polynesia. The process is taken extremely seriously, with a strict manufacturing code. So much so, this process has been validated and protected by an Appellation of Origin which was awarded to Monoi de Tahiti back in 1992.

What are some of the benefits of Monoi de Tahiti?

Monoi de Tahiti is rich in methyl salicylate, a soothing and hydrating agent. Naturally concentrated, it can penetrate hair creating a protective barrier to harsh elements like the sun, wind and salt water.

When it comes to hair maintenance, Monoi de Tahiti can be applied after shampooing and blow drying or styling. It adds shine, smoothes frizzy and unruly hair types and works as a luscious conditioning oil.
