When to use a neutralising shampoo

At FARCOM PROFESSIONAL, we believe that all hair should be healthy, shiny and radiant. After intensive colouring or technical procedures, it’s important to use a neutralising shampoo, which restores the natural pH balance. These treatments, whilst can completely transform hair, can leave some hair types and textures in a compromised position, increasing the alkaline levels.

Leaving your hair hanging in an alkaline state after any type of chemical treatment can lead to long term damage to the hair’s structure and scalp. Why? Because hair and scalp are naturally more acidic, and in this more acidic state, hair cuticles remain flat, and the scalp can naturally fight off bacteria, dandruff, and inflammation.

What are some treatments that can increase hair’s pH balance?

A chemical straightening treatment increases the pH level of the hair to break down stubborn curls into pin-straight hair. But the downside of such treatments like this, is leaving the hair in a higher alkaline state, which can lead to issues like hair breakage, dry scalp, scalp fungus, and soreness or inflammation.

Another good example of a high pH hair treatment is colouring or bleaching which uses often intense chemicals to lift hair cuticles and allow colour pigments to enter the hair shaft. This results in high porosity hair or a higher pH balance.

What happens to the hair when in an alkaline state?

During and after technical or colouring procedures, hair cuticles are lifted and exposed, and the scalp due to being over-compromised, is left exposed, potenitally vulnerable to bacterial infection and a feeling of greasiness. Some of these procedures, depending on how strong they are, can raise some hair type’s pH levels to as high as 11.

For healthy hair, we recommend that pH levels should be:

  • For hair: 3.5 – 4.5
  • For the scalp: 5.5

How does a neutralising shampoo restore hair after intensive colouring and technical procedures?

In short, the hair needs its balance and harmony restored after being under pressure of treatments like perming or intense colouring. A neutralising shampoo with lower pH-based ingredients, will counteract the high alkalinity, deep cleansing the hair and removing any nasty chemical build up, left over deposits and resetting the hair to a healthier state.

Can you use a neutralising shampoo regularly?

A neutralising shampoo is more acidic, and as a result, should only be used when the hair’s alkaline levels are higher. It’s recommended due its higher cleansing levels, that a neutralising shampoo is only used if hair has been chemically treated, processed or intensively coloured.
